So 00′s albums: Mastodon – Leviathan

September 16th, 2009 Peter

Here the latest episode dedicated to 2004 in the company of Mastodon, probably the biggest metal band out in this decade.

If for other artists was quite simple, I admit that for the Mastodon is quite tricky to choose which album insert within our “So 00′s albums” All four discs were produced from 2002 to today are means masterpieces. I immediately ruled out “Remission” (2002), the debut too unknown for heading and “Blood Mountain”, so I found myself having to choose between “Leviathan” and “Crack the Skye” (which we reviewed). In the end I opted for “Leviathan” because, despite “Crack the Skye” is definitely among the best things about this 2009, is perhaps too early to understand its importance.

“Leviathan” continues the speech “sludge metal” (and therefore of great Neurosis), adding progressive elements and a great personal touch. Special mention for the beautiful album cover that depicts the story of Moby Dick (among other things, the novel by Herman Melville is the basis of the concept of “Leviathan”).
