Behind the door by Cristiano De Andrés

One of the most inspired songs which have found place in the editions of the nineties of the Festival of Sanremo is “Behind the door” in the race brought successfully by Cristiano De André in 1993.  The facts were given about the young singer-songwriter and musician who had earlier published in “Songs with a long nose”, his third LP: Sanremo, in fact, Christian was not only ranked second behind Enrico Ruggeri, with winner “Mystery” with only 56 more votes, but would have won the prize of the critics, a good success with the public and very large consensus on the part of professionals, which would have seen in a while his song ‘its test of maturity and then a small classic, destined to grow more and more over the years.  And father Fabrizio, usually shy and reserved, would be delivered – even in public – your satisfaction.  Moreover De André had arrived in San Remo almost on the sly, to somehow have the moral winner: well before the others were the names which were concentrated on the predictions, except of course for Ruggeri which the victory was in some way in ‘ air.

Cristiano was performed for the first time in the second evening that of Thursday, February 25 1993 and at that point would soon understand that they are facing a possible outsider.  Not that the song, then it is particularly easy or at least in line with the closest festival needs: complex and elegant writing, on a network of piano and orchestra was placed in a pensive and poetic, full of dreams, small Anarchie, fragments personal, hopes “out of the choir.”  Probably it would take very little to make a social song, like the rest, in that spring 1993 was not difficult the intelligentsia hope the song writing yet directives of interpreters, from the beginning, took a completely different direction, to make a song dedicated to the relationship with ourselves, with our little rebellions, but in a much more nuanced and intimate, as it was in the intentions of the authors.  Cristiano De André, in fact, “Behind the door” had composed together with Daniele Fossati, author of the text, which for a long time was seen as the father unexpectedly assigned (by the way of fathers), the most famous Ivano, but also to Sanremo the following year, once in the race, it would definitely clear things up.  The production, however, was Vittorio Cosma (piano also) and Lucio Fabbri, the legendary violin of the PFM, a friend of many songwriters.  The song was included as a pioneer of the CD “Cristiano De André”, repacking of the previous “Songs with the long nose,” and it would undoubtedly become the most popular song by De André: which, however, would no longer be able to return to Sanremo even until 2003, when the race would bring in “a new day.”  At the same time would publish an album the same name, where the new versions of its most interesting passages, he would have found the place of course also “Behind the door,” performed live in studio “in front of colleagues and fans.
